JESSLYN MURPHY
JESSLYN MURPHY
Jesslyn Murphy - Photography by Rachel Bradley
Impressionistic, semi-abstracted paintings of places that I know and am moved by. Drama comes from the intensity of sunlight, vastness of place or secret foliage. You may have been there too and loved the same things. I paint the Australian landscape that I love with a sensitive eye to try to capture a vast and sometimes less-appreciated beauty.
My works have been described as making the viewer feel small. This feeling of quiet awe is my inspiration and is a sensation that can give us perspective on the weight of our concerns. Looking at big things or seeing as far as we can in a natural space encourages that sense of vastness of the world that we used to be so familiar with as children.
Each piece begins with visiting sites, feeling my way around and getting interested in the natural landmarks. Later on, working from my own photographs in my studio in Mordialloc, I build up multiple, painted colour 'sketches' of the area. The final painting comes through once all my preparations give a decent map of how to proceed. I work with a "ground" that is usually in a complimentary colour to the dominant colour of the artwork and apply paint in a careful, fragmented expressive way to create gaps for the underpainting to be seen.
